Adam Smith Club meeting

  • Dec. 7th, 2009 at 7:04 AM
Mannie Gross
on
How to Smell a (Scientific) Rat

The Adam Smith Club will host a meeting on Tuesday the 8th of December 2009, at the Curry Club Cafe, 396 Bridge Road, Richmond 3121

Mannie Gross is Vice President of The Australian Adam Smith Club and has a BSc(Hons) and MSc from the University of Melbourne. From a young age he has been interested in the history and philosophy of science. The issue of global warming first came to his attention in the 1990s after hearing John F Daly* address the Club and reading his book The Greenhouse Trap: Why the Greenhouse Effect Will Not End Life On Earth.

The speaker will explain how, armed with the scientific method, (which any layman can comprehend), a few rules of thumb and elementary logic the anthropogenic global warming (AGW) theory can be thoroughly refuted. The question then is why do so many scientists believe in AGW theory?

Attendance is open to both members and non-members. Those desiring to attend should complete the attached slip (pdf) and return it to the Club no later than Monday the 7th of December 2009. Tickets will not be sent. Those attending should arrive at 6:30pm for dinner at 7:00pm. The cost is $40.00 per head for members and $45.00 per head for non-members

* Those following Climategate might remember one of the hacked emails said John Daly's death was a form of good news.

I am a very lucky girl after a rather successful season working the Grater St Louis Renfair I found out about a steampunk convention in the planning stages. http://rose-society.org/index.html I am makeing several one of a kind pieces using altered found clothing and trims. Come out and see me so I can take pictures of everyone's cool outfits since I will be stuck at a table most of the time.

So far this is the true masterpiece of what I have completed but there will be much more to come. The bolero is still very much a work in process as I am sure you can tell from the pins in it.

New!

  • Dec. 6th, 2009 at 11:42 AM
Hi everyone! My name is Caroline and I have always loved steampunk even before I knew what the movement was called. I think it goes back to the Smashing Pumpkins 1979 music video and Hayao Miyazaki movies where he uses elements of steampunk. I have a degree in fashion design and make things every now and then. I graduated back in 2008 and have slacked off in sewing, but I am planning on making a leather corset, dress and probably some cool gadgets sometime soon. I'm going to a thrift store tomorrow to look for clocks or anything with gears I can work with.

I live in Birmingham, AL and I don't know any steampunkers in my area, if there are any.. Maybe Atlanta? But anyways there isn't much to do here, but it is perfect for steampunk fashion photoshoots. Birmingham is very rich in iron and grew because of the iron industry. We have this place called Sloss Furnace where all the iron and metal work was done back in the day and is now a national landmark. We also have the largest iron statue in the world of the Vulcan (mythological God of fire and working metal) that has a museum and park. Both of these places have lots of backdrops with gears and other metal work aesthetics. Here are some pictures of sloss furnace. They teach metal work art classes there that I am thinking about taking which is also pretty cool.

Anyways I just wanted to say hi and after I finish making my steampunk outfit I'll post some pics for everyone to see on here.

I bought four lovely box frames yesterday at IKEA. Black frames, white mattes... so I've been pondering filling them with some paper cuttings.

If you can name these two characters you are either grew up watching the BBC or are an anglophile extraordinaire.

Glass Etching Tutorial

  • Dec. 6th, 2009 at 11:59 AM
Ok, so several people wanted an explanation of how I made my Rassilon plate. Since I personally wanted to try doing some etching on a glass I decided to take pictures and make a tutorial. The glass didn't come out so well, its hard to etch on rounded surfaces, but it was a good learning experience and the steps are the same.

Boris

Location: Madison, Wisconsin, USA

Boris

Boris is a seal point ragdoll. This clumsy kitty took a nosedive after once trying to sit on top of the flat screen TV. Huffy, he went and sharpened his claws on the screen. Boris also has a knack for getting his head stuck in yogurt cartons, making a run for it, and crashing into the wall. Then there is the time he jumped into the toilet thinking the lid was down… I had a blue kitten streak across my living room spraying a wake of blue water on my floor. He is such a goofball, and it’s hard to imagine how I ever lived without this much laughter in my home.

Last Chance: Sad Bukkit Shirt of the Day

  • Dec. 6th, 2009 at 6:59 AM

Happy Friday, friends! We’ve saved a great design for the weekend. It’s quite possible that if you decide not to purchase this soon-to-be-classic now, you’ll spend all next week (and perhaps the rest of your life) regretting it. Visit LOLMart Shirts to avoid regret.

sad bukkit

Today is the last day you can purchase our Sad Bukkit shirt, and then it will be gone forever!

So you’ve heard LOLrus’ side of the story. Now it’s Bukkit’s turn to have a say.

Bukkit first rose to prominence as LOLrus’ silent but graceful co-star in what has now become a very famous and popular meme. The storyline was as follows: LOLrus has a bukkit. The antagonist, an evil zookeeper, takes LOLrus’ bukkit away, and LOLrus no longer has a bukkit. Heartbreaking stuff here, folks.

Now you can wear your heart(break) on your sleeve. Or chest, rather.

So why don’t you swim on over to our store and show support for Sad Bukkit. Purchasing his shirt is a surefire way to cheer him up.

LOLMart t-shirts are priced at only $15 (that includes FREE US ground shipping!) and make the perfect holiday gift for a friend (or for yourself).

two new projects

  • Dec. 6th, 2009 at 9:38 AM
I've started work on two new patterns and I thought I'd share a picture of what each will look like when finished, since what I have stitched so far doesn't look much like anything...although to me part of the one [Kiba] looks kind of like a hippo...but I've been told I'm the only one who sees it.

I'll share some progress pictures once I have a decent amount done.

This is Peanut and she needs a macro after yesterday's ordeal-- we were at the emergency vet till midnight with apparent chocolate poisoning... I just want everybody to be especially careful-- don't turn your backs on your cats if you're baking Xmas cookies that have chocolate in them!!!

EDIT: I probably should say that she managed to come out of it all right, thank goodness!
